UR Spider College Debate Tournament

Announcing the 2009 Spider Classic:

October 10-12, 2009 (Sat-Mon) at the University of Richmond

The University of Richmond Debate Team would like to take this opportunity to invite you to the 2009 Spider Debate Tournament. The tournament features 8 rounds of preliminary competition for open and junior varsity, and 7 rounds for novice (with an 8th time slot reserved for novice teaching sessions). You can register on-line (DebateResults) or over email (kkuswa@richmond.edu). AirTran and Jet Blue have started service to Richmond and Southwest flies to Hampton/Williamsburg (90 min) and Norfolk (less than 2 hours).

Features of the tournament:

1. Approximately half the teams at the tournament will clear.

2. Novice Teach-In session. Saturday night (during Round 4), the novices will have the opportunity to engage in discussion and ask questions with a group of coaches and judges.  Judges and coaches who are interested in teaching (let us know early) will lead teaching sessions for a group of novices.  When you contact us, let us know the topics you are willing to teach and whether you plan to work with anyone else. Teaching during round four will count as one round toward your school’s judging obligation.  Most importantly, this will give novices a chance to ask questions about the first three debates, meet other novices in a non-competitive environment, and prepare for Sunday’s debates.

3. The tournament will abide by ADA, CEDA, and NDT guidelines. Any conflict will be resolved by the Director in consultation with the Tab Room Director. We are happy to announce that Scott Luchetti will once again be directing the tab room.
